Summary

The Furniture Finisher (Top Coater) applies high grade finishes on Keilhauer products according to specified colour stains or paint. This role requires efficient and accurate attention to product quality and safety protocols while meeting a fast-paced production schedule. Extensive on-the-job training is required to become proficient in all product models.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Applies high grade finish to products.
    • Pick and inspect quality parts for daily production.
    • Prepare products for staining or painting by standing and inspecting them.
    • Learn all the steps necessary to cover the product, which may require reading instructions or diagrams.
    • Selects finishing ingredients and mixes to obtain specified colour or shade to match existing finish.
    • Processes parts as required, wipes on stain, scuffs, sands, shade coats and sprays topcoat.
    • Assists new/temporary employees with understanding tasks.
    • Contributes as a reliable and effective team member within and across teams.
  2. Performs all tasks in keeping with Keilhauer’s safety and quality standards.
    • Ensures quality of finished products meets Keilhauer standards.
    • Operates tools and equipment in a safe manner; cleans and cares for spray guns and keeps work areas clean and orderly; informs Supervisor of issues.
    • Follows all company and OSHA Safety regulations; works in a safe manner and uses personal protective equipment as instructed; reinforces housekeeping and Keilhauer’s core values.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years’ working experience wood finishing environment; additional experience is an asset.
  • Completion of high school or training/education from a vocational/trade school is an asset.
  • Experience working with pneumatic/power tools (i.e.: sanders, drivers, spray guns)
  • Knowledge of different types of wood and finishing techniques.
  • Rework skills and mechanical aptitude are a must.

Essential Physical and Intellectual Requirements

  • Communication: Must be able to read and write in English; must be able to speak English or communicate in American Sign Language (ASL); must work well with others and communicate effectively.
  • Mobility: Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time on a cement floor; frequently required to move around a large manufacturing facility; may be required to perform work function at either Keilhauer location; frequent reaching, bending, squatting, and stooping required.
  • Manual Dexterity & Coordination: Must have the strength, dexterity and coordination to frequently lift products to the workstation (up to 50 lbs.) use hands, wrists and fingers to grip, pull and manipulate various production pieces; grip and use hand tools and paint brushes; must be able to operate the spray gun.
  • Vision: Must have good visual acuity to inspect and evaluate quality of products, select the correct components, and read the daily schedule; specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, colour vision and the ability to focus.
  • Cognitive Ability: Must have the ability to read and interpret work guidelines, safety instructions and operating manuals; must possess general knowledge of hand and air tools; must have the ability to learn new skills; must use common sense and be able to carry out written and/or oral instructions.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employees spend 100% of their time in the production area, where they are frequently exposed to airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

  • Must be capable of multi-tasking and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • You must be able to wear personal protective equipment, as required (ex. ear plugs, dust masks).
  • Must maintain a sense of urgency under tight deadlines.
  • May be required to work at either Keilhauer location or help with other functional areas as the need arises.
  • Must be willing to participate in training relevant to the position or industry.
  • May occasionally be required to work overtime to meet business needs.
  • Follows all company and OSHA Safety regulations; works in a safe manner, reinforces housekeeping and Keilhauer’s core values.
